The BFP

I remember sitting with some close friends on Superbowl Sunday and telling them how excited I was to stop taking birth control, February 4th was the first day without it. I had started taking a prenatal and wasn’t expecting anything immediately, so no pressure. At this point, I was still working out at least 4 times a week, pretty high intensity (kickboxing, turbo kick, intervals, etc). My OB said this was absolutely safe given that I had been working out consistently like this for over a year. So Josh and I spent the next few weeks trying as the urge presented itself, there was no pressure and everything about these few weeks was care-free.

I had booked a trip back to VA over my spring break in March. Carson (1st nephew, my sister Megan & Danny’s son) was growing too fast and I wanted to get back to see him any chance that I could. Josh couldn’t join because he didn’t have much time off, and he was saving for our family beach trip and for Caitlin and Dylan’s wedding later that summer. I had thought about how I’d heard that flying can possibly mess with your cycle, but I wasn’t expecting anything so soon, so just suppressed that thought, and who knows if there’s any truth to it. Once back in CO, I’m convinced that we conceived the night I got back. I remember laying in bed the next night and feeling a sharp twinge in my lower abdomen and thinking “could that be implantation?” We went about our lives per usual. I went to a bridal shower and drank WAY too many mimosas. Even if I was pregnant, it would be too early for a few drinks to mess anything up. Oh, how care-free I was then.

On Saturday April 13, before heading to the gym for my weekly Turbo Kick class with the most bad-ass instructor around, I took a pregnancy test. I sat it on the sink and just waited. When I finally looked, there were 2 PINK LINES! I couldn’t believe it happened so fast and effortlessly! Josh was still in bed, so I wrote a note “We did it love!” and left it on the sink with the test and came back to bed trying to hide my excitement. When he finally got up (after I asked him multiple times if he had to pee while he was scrolling on his phone, he had to know something was up), he walked into the bathroom, then back out and repeatedly said “Really?”, with lots of air fist pumps and “YES!”’s to follow. It was the best feeling in the world. A little later, we went about our day and I headed to the gym. I felt so giddy the entire time, I’m sure my girlfriend knew something was up when I told her to tell her husband hello, and said the entirely wrong name to her!

I went home, showered and zonked out on the couch for a nap. I never take naps! Seems like this pregnancy was really amping up fast!

I took another test later in the afternoon (dumb idea), and it was negative. I immediately started googling all of the things, and since I had drank so much water during my workout and after, I diagnosed that my urine was too diluted to detect the pregnancy hormone. I’ll take another test in the morning.

The next morning, I took another test, this time the Clearblue since it indicates “Pregnant” or “Not Pregnant”. I got up at 7am and peed on the test and sat it down. After watching it blink through each bar, there it was! PREGNANT! Praise the Lord! I made sure to give my sister Megan the update and Josh and I relaxed that day. At such peace knowing our sweet little babe, that we made, all on our own, was growing inside me. According to my app that tracked ovulation (which I now know is COMPLETE BS, do NOT put all of your eggs in this basket), due date would be around December 24th. A sweet little Christmas miracle.

That night I googled “ways to announce your pregnancy” and even found these cute ideas to tell our parents. My favorite were coupons “Good for 1 Grandchild. Redeem December 2019”.
