The Calm Before the Storm (Part 1)

Monday 4.15.19

All day at work today, I felt like I was hiding something and had the biggest secret to tell! Obviously, I didn’t tell anyone. During my plan time I went to the printer room to call and make the OB appointment. The receptionist told me Congratulations and the appointment was set for May 8th, my parents’ anniversary.

I had a dentist appointment after work today and I was due for routine X-rays. My dental hygienist asked (as they always do), “Any chance you could be pregnant”, as she’s holding the heavy vest to place on my chest. I kind of smiled and said, well actually… I just took a test this past weekend and YES! She was so happy for me and said “We’re often the first people that women tell!” which totally makes sense.

I had another workout class at 5:30, Kickboxing with another bad-ass instructor! I did all of my regular jumps and kicks and after class she asked how things were going for us (she knew we were trying). I told her that we just found out we are pregnant! I’ll never forget her response, she looked at me, wide eyes and said “Are you crazy? Doing a workout like this?” Which I totally understand her concern as she conceived her twins at 45. Since my doctor said it would be fine to continue any workouts I’ve been doing, I shared that with her. Also, am I crazy telling people only days after we got a positive pregnancy test?

My students had a field trip today, Adapted Softball. I teach severe needs special education students at a middle school in Conifer, CO. Once a month, we have Adapted PE field trips and play against other middle school teams in the district. We have peer mentors that go along and help the students be able to participate in a meaningful way. It is such a joy, every single trip. I always play the role of running around and taking pictures to send to their parents, they always appreciate it.

In the midst of our day, some crazy events had transpired. Since we are approaching the anniversary of the Columbine shooting in Colorado, everyone is always a bit on edge. A lady from Florida, who was obsessed with the Columbine shooting, had flown to Colorado, purchased a gun and ended up near my school, a mountain area west of Denver. On our bus ride back after the field trip, we had to pull over in the King Soopers parking lot and wait because all area schools were on Lockout [meaning no one could go in or out, but business as usual inside]. We waited for almost an hour before being allowed to go back to the school. The next day, school was canceled for the entire Denver metro area as the FBI and police searched for this crazy person!

Some close friends from VA are visiting so I’m glad I’ll get tomorrow off work to spend with them, but hate it is under these circumstances!
